2008 Rincon Classic: 25th Anniversary Celebration
Welcome!
Surf Happens is proud to welcome you to the 25th annual Rincon Classic slated to be held on Saturday and Sunday February 23 and 24, 2008. This all-ages event is open to local area residents to celebrate our sport and the spirit of aloha within our community. 2008 earmarks our official turning over of a new environmental leaf as we endeavor to turn the Classic into a green event and minimize our impact on the point and the earth.
Through donations from local artists we are creating all organic trophies that are unique works of art. Each piece is hand crafted and designed to represent the ideals of the Rincon Classic. Not only are the trophies good for the environment, but they won’t sit in your corner and gather dust either. We have everything from Guitars and Uekelele’s courtesy of Jensen’s Guitar, Drums from Full Circle and Uncle Gilly’s, killer hand painted plates from Color Me Mine of Goleta, ceramic waves, and solar carvings by Solar B on driftwood from Rincon.
What could be more Aloha then giving back through the event? A portion of all proceeds are being donated to Heal The Ocean, Hugs For Cubs, and the Teddy Bear Foundation, in support of the environment and to contribute to local charities.
What You Get for Entering: Upon entry, all contestants will receive a burlap bag courtesy of Simple Shoes and other attendance prizes. The bag will contain a raffle ticket, official 2008 25th anniversary Rincon Classic t-shirt, and a burrito ticket from Chipotle. Contestants also recieve free energy drinks from Red Bull, Coffee courtesy of Carribean Coffee, and hot dogs from Mad Dogs State Street. Be sure to hold onto your meal ticket as that will gain your access for food both days and get you into the awards ceremony on Sunday night.
Check out all the divisions that we have available, and register today! In addition to our regular divisions get ready to see high flying action in the Red Bull Airshow and the areas best up and comers and professionals competing for more than $3,000 in prize money and killer gear in the Budlight Pro division. Heats will begin both days at 7:00 a.m. and a complete schedule of events will be on Surfhappens.com by Wednesday, February 20.

The Rincon Classic - A Historical Perspective
by Chris Keet, Surf Happens Owner & Founder
As I began working on the 25th anniversary Rincon Classic, I found myself pondering exactly what made something into a classic. Was it the look or feel, whether or not it could withstand the tests of time, the location, or maybe the people involved that made it so. A classic wasn’t something that could be called so from the get go, or could it?
Looking to the Websters New World Dictionary I found several definitions that seemed to match up as perfectly as the Indicator to the cove, the cobblestones to the sea, and the locals to her shoreline. definitions; being an excellent model of its kind. A famous tradition, a literary or artistic work of the highest excellence.
Roger Nance and the founders of the original Rincon Classic matched the concepts of both parts of the name perfectly back in 1979, taking what could have become just another surf contest and turning it into a legend. Year after year the event has maintained its integrity serving as a gathering place for those that have shared in her liquid perfection and called the surrounding communities their homes.
Roger and the Surf n' Wear crew created the tradition, and brought the community together for seventeen consecutive years before laying the Classic down to rest. It is with great honor for Surf Happens to be continuing the legacy of the Rincon Classic for the eighth consecutive year. The support of our amazing staff, the local community, peers and mentors, and all of our sponsors is what makes the event possible.
Surf Happens Would Like to Thank:
Rincon Point residents,
Town and Country Realty,
California State Parks, the Surf Happens Staff and the communities of Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, and all our supporting sponsors for making this event possible.
