No Sadness at Depressions

By Mike Kew

It fell one day early, yet the vibes were sincere.
As was the sunshine for the Santa Barbara Surfing Series' (SBSS) third event of the 2001 season, this one staged in Isla Vista on Sunday, March 25, over the sand bottom of Depressions, around the corner from Campus Point, the original venue pick for the contest's original Saturday timeslot.
Severe lack of swell provoked SBSS marshal Chris Keet's postponement of the contest from Saturday to Sunday, which, despite dire swell predictions for the morning hours, went off without a hitch. A solid westerly pulse was slated to slice into the Santa Barbara Channel by early evening, building through Sunday night, peaking Monday morning.
Mushy waist- to chest-high windswell was on tap for the contestants at Depressions, who made the best of the reality, which improved a tad as the tide ebbed. The morning high-tide conditions were quite marginal as far as shortboarding was concerned, as a pesky southeasterly cheese breeze had its way with the sea surface - a reverse action of the forecasted westerly gale we all could see tearing down the outer channel.
The surf action was stellar, nonetheless. Slashes, floaters, re-entries, the odd aerial or two - not bad considering this event was almost a no-go. The Airshow and the '70s-style Tag Team bout were crowd pleasers, as usual.
Lensmen John Norstrand and Scott Starr captured the festivities on film, and the judges did an excellent job once more. It was far from epic, but Depressions came through for everybody, whether they were competing or merely lounging under hot sun on the soft, white sand, thickly strewn with rocks and driftwood from wintertime energy.
Woodstock's Pizza in Isla Vista hosted the awards ceremony that evening, followed by a premier of the 1999-2000 SBSS season video, which included highlights of the winners' El Salvador jaunt last August.
The Santa Barbara Surfing Association would like to thank Wavehunters Surf Travel, the Beach House/Surf-n-Wear, Beatty Products, Surfer magazine, WetSand, Kinko's and Woodstock's Pizza for their continued support.
SBSS Contest no. 4 will be the AAAA-rated season finale May 12 at Jalama Beach. Ring 805-560-8383 or peruse www.surfsb.com for further information.
