Meteorological
Santa Barbara magic and big hearts prevailed for the
Santa Barbara Surfing Association's (SBSA) first annual
Softboard Christmas Unity Surf Challenge, staged last
December under blazing sunshine in waist to chest-high
glass at Leadbetter Point.
The
event's concept, as conceived by SBSA head Chris Keet,
was to compete on softboards (i.e. BZ or Doyle) and,
through entry fees, muster $2,000 for Santa Barbara-based
Christmas Unity, a nonprofit organization supporting
underprivileged families throughout the holiday season.
About $1,200 was netted by day's end, plus more than
200 cans of food and 40 gifts, including a Clyde Beatty
surfboard.
"Despite not reaching
our monetary goal, the day was priceless," Keet
said. "Essentially, it was the surfing community
coming together to give back through the sport that's
given us so much."
Shaun Tomson, Sean Hayes
and Chris Malloy each made cameos for the professionals
division.
"I'm stoked to be
a part of anything that has a cause," Malloy told
the Santa Barbara News-Press. "People like Chris
(Keet) and myself are blessed with the opportunity to
give back. You look around and this is all about friends
and family and giving back."
