Pitted at Tar Land

      Both Mr. Rain Man and King Neptune subdued themselves in due time for the Santa Barbara Surfing Series AA Rated Contest #1, held January 13 at Tarpits in Carpinteria.
      Just hours prior, buoy wave-height observations hovered near 20 feet, deftly marred by southerly gales and several inches of rain. Lo, the competition day dawned sun-kissed and glassy with a peaky, head-high pulse scraping over the funky reefy/beachbreaky bottom we all know and love to constitute Tarpits.
      A mid-morning 5.6-foot high tide provided the competitors with more backwash than they'd wished for, but that didn't stop the action from revving up. The usual bouillabaisse of area surf talent contested to the delight of spectators and participants alike, many of whom were expecting stormy conditions.
      Veteran lensman Scott Starr lurked down the beach and captured the day on Fujichrome, while the Santa Barbara News-Press' Becky Freeman cameoed to plug the event in newsprint. Midday saw the arrival of steaming Woodstock's pizza and soda pop as a precursor to the afternoon finals heats and resultant awards ceremony, replete with excess goodies which were distributed accordingly.
