Blue Pacific Campus Point Classic:
Coming Of Age
The
Blue Pacific Campus Point Classic was blessed with
beautiful sunny conditions and fun 2-4 foot surf producing
some highly contestable conditions, and a large turnout
for both days of the competition. Each division featured
surfers who showcased their point break skills by
linking turns to the beach, while simultaneously looking
for sections to punctuate controlled yet radical tailslides,
aerials, and for some, new mature signature moves.
Mens standouts included solid performances by Dennis
Rizzo, and Peter Mussio who pulled most of the rabbits
out of their hats to hold off Tyler Anderson, and
Ryan Peterson who were sandbagging it from the Juniors
division. Jalama sparring partners Rizzo, and Mussio,
were neck and neck throughout the finals Rizzo taking
the win with a 7.5 in the last 20 seconds of the finals.
Juniors
winner Alex Mcgeever put local knowledge and solid
rail turns into every ride narrowly defeating last
years champion and Campus posterboy Tyler Anderson.
Ryan Peterson finished third behind the duo with radical
controlled layback snaps and smooth reverse 540 tailslides.
In fourth place was boys winner Colin Schildhauer
who took out the smooth ever present Daniel Jacobs
and finalist newcomer Evan Geeb. Over the last year
all of these guys have stepped up their surfing, evolving
from tricky groms into mature radical surfers
watch for these guys in the future.
Colin Schildhauer put on a virtually unchallenged
exhibition of style, railturns and newschool tricks,
to defeat the solid goofy foot antics of Sean Crane
in the Boys final. The maturity and style that Colin
mixes with explosive controlled carves, slides, and
aerials, impressed all attendees. Second place Sean
Crane was followed by Dustin Willman, Colin Anderson,
Robert Gray, and Stuart Thielman who all had strong
showings.
The Gremlins division featured Forrest Crane, and
the Fraley brothers Logan, and Mason. Mason rollercoastered
his way through three sections before cutting back
and doing a coffin to seal his victory. Forrest Crane
had a strong second place showing catching the biggest
wave of the final on which he combined off the lips,
cuttbacks, and floaters with smooth style. In third
place was Logan Fraley who had several stand out rides
to the beach. These Gremlins are amazing!
In the Grominas division Jordan Goldberg competed
with Womens finalists Liz Clark and Lisa Knott. Jordan
caught a head high bomb free-fell to the bottom, recovered
and had a pocket ride to win the Grominas final. Liz
Clark pulled off some clean cuttback, and floater
combinations to oust Lisa Knott in the womens division
with Goldberg finishing in third. The Womens longboard
final featured Debbie Truatvine, Kyle Schmidt, and
Sue Peterson. Debbie had several intense pocket rides
and stole the victory from schmidt with a clean stylish
cuttback to nose ride combination. Schmidt and Peterson
also had several great rides however, wave selection
and length of ride proved to be a factor.
The Longboard division featured youth versus experience
as top performers Grant Toland, Matt Rickard, Oliver
Parker, and Scott Beckley faced off with the legendary
Mike Ortega, and Wayne Rich. Toland linked every wave
to the beach with graceful noserides, and clean cuttbacks
to defeat the omniripping Matt Rickard. Rickard was
followed by local hero Oliver Parker, Scott Beckley,
Mikey Ortega, and Wayne Rich. Note: Mikey and Wayne
posted the two highest wave scores in the longboard
division on day one.
The Masters/Grandmasters division featured Campus
Point hero Travis Bower, the international man of
intrigue Clyde Beatty Jr. and Occys uncle and
stunt double Mike Fraley. Bower the only regularfoot
pushed the limits with every turn to take out the
goofy hygencs of Clyde and Fraley. Beatty finished
second after posting the highest score of the first
day of an 8.5 and Fraley was right behind him with
speed turns and backside bashes.
The Airshow final illustrated a changing of the guard
as 15 year old Ryan Peterson took the victory with
a perfectly executed aerial 540. Last years airshow
victor Peter Mussio lost by a half a point. He nearly
won but missed a landing on a huge frontside boost.
